Graphic design has now been used for many years only its form has changed over the years from manual methods to the advanced systems you see in place today. There are many companies that specialise in graphic design this is mainly computer aided as are most types of graphic design today.
How Graphic Design Began
The graphic design process began back in the 4th and 5th Centuries with simple printing techniques, it wasn't until 1450 that graphic printing was taken up on a wide scale. This Old Style of graphic design was widely popular through Europe but it wasn't until the 19th Century the move was made to separate the graphic design process from that of fine art. Through this time graphic design had become widely used for advertising, packaging and page layouts in press and books.
The Development of Graphic Design
The graphic design process has improved dramatically over the last few years and it is now used in a large portion of visual aid and advertising situations. It is also applied in the case of company branding techniques such as company logos, colours, fonts and text. In fact there are many cases where graphic design is now used that you may not have even realised, especially in the entertainment industry. Here are some examples where there will have been influences from graphic design with in entertainment:
- Scenery
- Programmes and props for stage productions
- Comic books
- Opening and closing credits for films
- Newspapers and magazines
- Television shows and adverts
- Blogs online
- Visual story telling
Within newspaper and magazine companies it is the graphic designer that will have the responsibility of the page layouts. So the journalists will gather their text and images for the page and the designer will then have to take the information and display it in a readable format. They will also advise on whether there is anything else that needs to be added to the page to improve the layout before printing.
